Estepona

After taking back Granada in 1492 the strategic location of Estepona made the Catholic Kings decide to rebuild the ancient Muslim castle named Castillo de an Luis as well as various battlement towers built all along the Estepona coast.

Throughout this history we have inherited vestiges such as the Castillo de San Luis, the parish church and tower of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios (XVIII century), the Torre del Reloj (clock tower) of the Muslim era with the dome dating from the XVIII century and La Ermita del Calvario (XVIII century). Now-a-days we have five museums: the Tools (Aperos) Museum , the Sea Museum, the Dolls (Muñecas) Museum, the Bull Fight (Taurino) Museum and the Archaeological Museum.

The old town has kept the typical architecture of a village of Andalusia spattered fith balconies full of ftowers standing out against the white houses.

Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs form part of its. history. Phoenicians reached our coasts founding townships and lived together with the local population until the end of the 2nd century when the Romans conquered the peninsula.

The most important township of the Roman era is located in the area of the Gaudalmansa river where there are remains of thermal facilities which might have belonged to the Roman city of Salduba.

The muslin conquest started at the beginning of the VIII century. A fortress named "Munt Nis" or the Nice Castle was built and, later on, during the ruling of the Caliphate of Alberraman 2nd, another fortress was built named Estebuna. This name is still today an interesting enigma because nobody up to now has been able to decipher its meaning. It might originate in the name of the town. In 1456 the armies of King Enrique IV of Castilla conquered Estepona.

We can savour the Estepona cuisine in bars and restaurants with a rich assortment such as the typical sopa campera (country soup), gazpachuelo, gazpacho and special fish dishes; sardine kebabs, baked fish in salt crumb, Fritura Malagueña (a selection of fried fish) sardina a la teja (sardine casserole), salmonete (red mullets) and pulpo (octopus) salad. A special mention of the home made goat cheese with the milk from Estepona goats which have won many national and international awards.

The program of festivities of Estepona is extensive and rich in popular customs with, among others, the Holy Week for its solemnity, the San Isibro Labradorfeast of 15 May and the night of 23 June with the traditional burning of los Bigotes de San Juan (Saint John's moustache). The Feria and Fiestas Mayores of the 1st week of June, the land and sea procession of the Virgen de Carne on 16 July and finally the Tourist Day held around the end of august.

As for farming, Estepona has a huge yearly production of citrus fruits. Tropical cultivation has been introduced such as avocados and aloe.

Though the town extends along the beachfront with 21 km of coast line, the major part of its territory is located within the range of Sierra Bermeja and its foothills, the Pico de los Reales (1449 m) having a genuine environmental interest. The natural beauty of the Sierra and the presence of a pinsapo forest, a special pine relic of the glacial, era have made it a natural reserve. Estepona boasts a great marina ideal to practice nautical sports and fishing. This municipality also offers mountain sports, nature and adventure. Five golf courses and numerous hotels among which there are three with five stars. If you add the Congress and Exhibition Palace to all this, it enables Estepona to be a tourist destination catering for the wishes of all the tourists. A special mention ought to be made of the nature park Selwo with 2,471 acres of land in which 2,000 animal species live in semi-freedom, a natural class room and an educational and environmental challenge as well. The Equestrian Art School Costa del Sol displays the pure equestrian tradition of Andalusia through equestrian shows while offering horse rides and courses, etc.

The town converted itself into a high standing tourist centre thanks to its magnificent beaches which boast the blue banner, many services and facilities, a privileged location between sea and mountain.
