Torremolinos

Tourist town by excellence it was the pioneer of tourism on the Costa del Sol and one of the main holiday destinations in Spain. It is located in the south of the Iberian peninsula, 10 kilometres from Malaga and only 4 km from the International MalagaAirport, Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

The "tourist boom" started in the fifties in this municipality and presently in addition to having the most extensive hotel accommodation on the Costa del Sol, it is the municipality which is the closest to the intemational airport; boasting a great communication highway network enabling, for example travel to Granada in less than one hour and a half or to Sevilla in two hours. The access by train is also easy.

Its exceptional climate enables the enjoyment of an average yearly temperature of 22° Centigrade and more than 325 sunny days a year. Visitors can thus enjoy the beach and practice outdoor sports whatever the season: trekking, lawn balls, horse riding, tennis, swimming, nautical sports and, indeed, golf. Geographically adjoined to Benalmadena-Costa is located "Puerto Marina" one of the most attractive marinas throughout the Costa del Sol.

Gastronomically, there is an extensive culinary choice from the most exotic to the most popular dish: "el Pescaito Frito". It can be savoured all along Torremolinos coast line almost seven kilometres long full of restaurants and chiringuitos on the beach with, among others, La Carihuela, the renown quarter of the fishermen where you may enjoy the best fishes and the Bajondillo area with its typical entirely refurbished beach chiringuitos.

The animated night life in Torremolinos offers numerous night clubs, bars, flamenco theatres, bowling, etc. as well as the ambience of the Paseo Maritimo (sea promenade) with terraces where you can have a drink listening to good music.

Regarding the Popular Fiestas, there is the Romeria (pilgrimage) de San Miguel, patron of the town. Being a fishermen's town, the feast of the Virgen del Carmen, on 16 July is celebrated by a sea side mass full of emotion and a splendid sea pilgrimage. Each year on the first Thursday of June the quarter "La Carihuela" mixes with the visitors to celebrate the "Dia del Pescarto" (Fish Day) graciously offering a tasting of fried fishes, beers and soft drinks.

To complete this selection of feasts and entertainment to be found in Torremolinos there is the "Tourist Day" held the first day of September during which the Town Hall of Torremolinos through its Delegation of Tourism elects various couples of tourists of Spanish and foreign nationalities who are assigned "Turista de Honor" to acknowledge the faithfulness shown towards Torremolinos as a holiday destination. On this occasion, giant paellas are cooked in public along the Paseo Maritimo enabling a distribution of 10,000 rations. This event culminates with a spectacular night show.
