So before rushing out and getting just any system installed, first ask yourself these questions:

What central heating system is best suited to my needs?

And

Who will install my heating system?

Choosing your central heating system

Oil or water, gas or electrical?

Central heating systems need to be chosen and tailored for your home’s specific needs. Choosing a standard central heating system shouldn’t be an option!

First you should decide whether you want an oil or water based heating system. Then choose what you want your system to run on, gas or electrics, although most heating systems these days use gas. Thirdly you need to work out the size of your system to heat your entire home adequately without wasting energy.

The best way to decide is to discuss with friends and family what they see as the advantages and disadvantages of the system they use. It is also important to discuss your heating needs and details of your installation with your heating system supplier.

Choosing how to install your central heating system:

Installing your own central heating system may seem simple once you have chosen the correct system for your home but first take an honest look at your capabilities versus the costs of hiring a professional.

a)Using a professional

Unless you are a serious DIYer, you may find it simpler and safer to leave installation to the professionals. Although self installation may seem cheaper, if you don’t know what you are doing and make some minor mistakes it could end up costing you more than hiring someone right from the start. Make sure that your installer is CORGI registered or OFTEC registered if you have chosen an oil boiler.

b) Self installation

If you have plenty of experience in renovating your own home and doing your own installations, installing your central heating system may be an easy task, depending on the system you have chosen.

Remember to follow these simple but essential guidelines when doing a self-installation:

  1. Plan where your ducts or pipes and vents will go. Check your house plans to see where you have the most space. Ideally, these should fit in your attic or your basement. They can also be installed under floorboards or through the walls or ceiling.
  2. Your boiler needs to be positioned on the interior of an exterior wall or somewhere that the exhaust from the system can vent out and that there is fresh air to aid in combustion.
  3. Your power should be turned off at the mains before attempting any installation.

Follow the instructions on your system’s manual carefully, if you are unsure of anything it is always better to consult with the manufacturer directly or to call a professional.
